The design of the nib is such that when writing, the ball is wetted with ink on one side, and on the other hand it rolls over the paper, transferring this ink to it and leaving a mark. This type of pens is the most durable and economical so far, besides, the ink does not smear on paper and dries very quickly. Among the disadvantages are the need for significant (compared to other types) efforts when writing, the tendency to “smear” if you use a pen with strong pressure for a long time before that, and also unsuitability for any other surfaces except paper or its analogues (however, there are exceptions in the form of space pens).
