Quality, durability, quiet on the road. Hitting a pothole guarantees a sidewall bulge, or consistently! maintain tire pressure of 2.7 atmospheres. Handling on icy roads |
The second generation of studded tyres of the IceContact line is strikingly different from the founder of the series. Improvements in it touched on almost everything that the German engineers of the Continental AG concern had a hand in.
Twice as many spikes
Similarity with its predecessor can be traced only in the asymmetric tread pattern. However, the blocks in it have a completely different shape, and the number of spikes has almost doubled. Moreover, they were dispersed around the perimeter of the tyre in such a way that, upon contact with the road, each spike clung to a new piece of ice. To prove that the increase in the number of studs did not lead to a more destructive effect on the roadway, the tyre passed a number of additional certification tests.
Stranglehold
The spikes are protected from ice formation by special pockets, which also have a positive effect on acoustic comfort when moving. In their seat, the “steel claws” sit very tightly — their installation is carried out together with a small amount of special composition, which, when vulcanized with a stranglehold, fixes the spike in its position.
Confidence in control
Returning to the topic of the asymmetric tread pattern, it should be noted that its inner part contributes to a more confident overcoming of snow obstacles, and the outer one is responsible for the responsive behavior of the tyre on slippery roads. When manoeuvring on ice and snow, precise steering response is achieved, making the Continental IceContact 2 name synonymous with confident handling on winter roads.

Furthermore, on icy roads, I can't say they're ideal. The car slides, and if you slightly move the steering wheel, you immediately feel it start to skid, even when changing lanes, the ice is noticeable. I watch "Corollas" driving nearby and I'm surprised. They're speeding and not afraid. I wonder if it's my tires that are bad, or are they just skating on the ice. But there is a plus that after two seasons, 97% of the studs are still in place, even though I drive both on highways and in the city with some wheel spinning (not often and not for long). The tires are actually soft, which causes the bulges, but they're quiet on asphalt and have better grip than hard tires. My rating is 3.5-4, everything is fine except the price is hefty. For such a set/price, you want to get maximum protection so you can drive and think: "Wow, now that's what I call worth it." I didn't get that feeling with these tires.
