Windscreen Wipers: specifications, types

Type

The type determines the general design of the wipers.

Frame. The frame is a system of rocker arms and hinges that gives the wiper its characteristic appearance. The main advantage of models of this type is versatility: an elastic frame allows the wiper to adapt to almost any curvature of the glass. At the same time, such products are inexpensive. On the other hand, they do not tolerate temperatures below zero: even in the "winter" model, the frame can freeze and lose elasticity, which leads to poor efficiency and the appearance of streaks on the glass. This is especially true for inexpensive wipers.

Frameless. Wipers that do not have the frame described above. The basis of the design is usually metal plates enclosed in a one-piece rubber-plastic case. This design makes the wiper practically insensitive to icing (in fact, frost resistance depends only on the materials of the blade in contact with the glass). In addition, the body can be given an aerodynamic shape, and frameless wipers are not as noisy as frameless ones. Their main disadvantage, in addition to the higher cost, is that the metal base is made for a specific glass curvature, and such wipers can only be used on those car models for which they were originally designed.

Hybrid. Externally, hybrid wipers are similar to frameless ones, but inside the body there is a system that...works on the same principles as a conventional frame (see above). Due to this, the advantages of both types are combined in one product: on the one hand, frost resistance and aerodynamics, on the other hand, the ability to “adapt” to glasses of different curvature. The main drawback of hybrid models is a rather impressive cost (which, however, is often due not only to the complexity of the design, but also to the use of fairly advanced and durable materials).

— Elastic. Replacement rubber blades for windscreen wipers. The ability to replace the "gum" is provided in many models of wipers: the blades wear out much faster than the base, and replacing them is much cheaper than buying a new wiper. In addition, in this way, in some cleaners, you can also change seasonality.

Suitable for

Regular installation location of the windscreen wiper. The windscreen and rear glass differ markedly in curvature and a number of other features, so this point must be taken into account when installing.

In package

The number of individual wipers included in the delivery.

Modern windscreen wipers are regularly supplied either one by one or in pairs. At the same time, paired kits are usually designed for the windscreen and include the main (driver's) and passenger wipers. Buying such a kit can be more convenient than purchasing each wiper separately; just keep in mind that the wipers in a pair can have different lengths (see below).

Driver's side wiper length

The length of the main wiper. In pair sets (see "Quantity per package"), it is indicated for a wiper intended for installation in front of the driver's seat. If there is only one wiper in the kit, then it is considered the main one, regardless of the purpose and place of the intended installation.

This parameter is one of the key when choosing: usually, the recommended wiper length is indicated by the car manufacturer.

Passenger wiper length

The length of the wiper, designed to be installed in front of the front passenger seat. Specified only for sets of a pair of wipers (see "Quantity per package").

This parameter is one of the key when choosing: usually, the recommended wiper length is indicated by the car manufacturer. Note that the passenger usually does not need as much space as the driver, so this wiper may be somewhat shorter than the main one.

Spoiler

This feature is indicated for wipers with a body of a special aerodynamic shape. This is done so that at high speeds the air flow does not lift the wiper (which is often found among models without a spoiler), but, on the contrary, presses it against the glass, providing the necessary cleaning efficiency. Note that a noticeable difference between brushes with and without a spoiler starts at fairly high speeds — about 110 km/h or more.

Spray nozzle

The presence of a built-in nozzle in the wiper for supplying washer fluid. This delivery is considered to be more efficient and economical than classic spraying from fixed nozzles, because the liquid is more evenly distributed over the glass. However, it makes sense to purchase wipers with this feature only if the “seats” for them are designed for this — otherwise the nozzles will turn out to be a useless excess, for which you will also have to overpay.

For right hand drive vehicle

Windshield wipers for right hand drive vehicles.

Recall that such cars were originally created for countries with left-hand traffic, but they can also be found on domestic roads. Some structural elements in right-hand drive cars are “mirrored” (when compared with the left-hand drive layout we are used to); the list of such elements includes windshield wipers. So for a right-hand drive car, you should look for wipers that were originally designed for such equipment.

Seasonality

The time of year for which the windscreen wiper is normally designed.

- All season. Wipers, theoretically usable at any time of the year. Almost all of them work normally in a relatively warm season, but suitability for winter conditions directly depends on the design features (for more details, see "Type").

- Winter. Wipers positioned by the manufacturer as winter. Note that such positioning is often more of a manufacturer's marketing move than a real specialization: "winter" models may not differ in characteristics from all-season ones and work well in warm weather. However, good resistance to low temperatures is still a must for them. Yes, and specialized models, originally created for the harsh winter, may also be produced. Anyway, the features of winter wipers should be clarified separately.

Mount

Mounting type used by the wiper. Detailed data on the design and operation of different types of fasteners can be found in special sources. Here we note a few key points.

Firstly, many automakers use different fasteners in different car models, and even the same type of fasteners can have varieties (available in several sizes). Secondly, there are adapters between different types; however, they should only be used in the most extreme cases, since the effectiveness of the wipers is usually reduced with this installation. Thirdly, some wiper models are initially equipped with universal adapters; such mounts are more effective than third-party adapters, but are more difficult to install than “native” ones, and still do not provide the same high-quality work.

Now on the market there are such types of mounts: Bayonet, Hook(main size 9x4), Hook 8x3, Hook 9x3, Hook 12x4, Pinch tab, Push button(main size 19mm), Narrow Push button (16mm), Wide Push button (22mm), Side pin(main size 22mm), Side pin (17mm), Top lock, Claw (Claw),...Pin Lock, Side Mounting, Сover Lock (MBTL1.1/GWB045), Cap Lock (VATL5.1/GWB046), Guide Lock (DNTL1.1/GWB044).
