Long awaited update
Goodram IRDM Pro Gen.2 is the second iteration of the flagship 2.5-inch SATA SSD from the Polish company Wilk Elektronik. If the first version was built on the old Phison S10 controller, then the second one was built on the advanced Phison S12. At the same time, the volume of the disk has doubled: at the price of the old 512-gigabyte model, they now give away a terabyte, and the maximum volume can reach hitherto unprecedented two terabytes.

The Phison PS3112-S12 controller has two ARM architecture cores, eight channels of flash memory and can work with an external buffer RAM chip, which has a particularly positive effect on the processing speed of the smallest 4K blocks. So, for IRDM Pro Gen.2, this figure is solid, by the standards of the SATA interface, 92000 and 86000 IOPS for reading and writing, respectively. The speeds of sequential reading and writing of large files did not let us down either — 555 and 535 MB / s, regardless of whether the data is compressed or not.
Smart caching
As is customary with drives based on 3D TLC memory, a smart SLC caching algorithm is implemented in IRDM Pro Gen.2. The volume of the virtual array is 1 GB for every 64 GB of disk space, that is, the 1 TB model has 20 GB of cache. This is more than enough to record a large video file, photo folder or game at maximum speed. And after exceeding the volume of the array, the write speed temporarily decreases and the disk needs a short time to rest.
Note to gamers
Given that the new games of the second half of 2019 weigh a hell of a lot (Read Dead Redemption 2 — 150 GB, Call of Duty Modern Warfare — 175 GB), buying Goodram IRDM Pro Gen.2 for 1 TB is more than justified. With a solid state drive of such an impressive volume, it is quite possible to do without an additional hard drive or connect an external HDD only in case of emergency. And if you need the cheapest SSD, then take a look at the Goodram CX400, and if, on the contrary, it is even faster, then the PX400.
