New Onyx
The Onyx compact wireless speakers have become one of the most successful products in Harman Kardon's current line of acoustics. Onyx 5 is equipped with two dynamic drivers (120 mm woofer and 25 mm tweeter) and a passive radiator that enhances the low-frequency range. Despite the fact that the Onyx series has always been popular, Harman decided to reinvent the wheel and built the system from scratch. Unfortunately, we failed to compare Onyx 4 head-on and understand how much the sound has changed.
Quality sound regardless of size
Without this, we can say that, due to its size, Onyx 5 sounds juicy, powerful and assertive. The sound quality is excellent even despite the modest size. The headroom is enough for a room of 30 squares. There is even a kind of stereo scene and good detail. If you buy a set of two speakers and connect them using Multiroom, then everything will be fine with the stage and details.
Powerful accented bass
What is most surprising about the Onyx 5 is its bass response. If you listen with your eyes closed, you might think that there are quite large and powerful acoustics in the room. And this is not the first time that such a kid destroys the stereotype that powerful bass certainly needs a large and powerful speaker. But this does not mean that the sound is tailored to dance music or hip-hop, blues or some kind of fusion jazz sounds just as great. Although, for some, the bass will still be too much. It already depends on personal preference.
Built-in battery for 8 hours
The company positions Onyx 5 as a purely home solution, however, the speaker was equipped with a built-in battery and a carrying handle. With battery life, the situation is not unambiguous, so it is better to consider it as a bonus. Harman claims about 8 hours, but the speaker can live that long only at a volume of 35 – 40%. If you turn it to the maximum, it will be a little more than 2 hours. And you will have to guess about this, since the speaker does not have any indicators. Plus, it takes about 5 hours to fully charge.
