An unusual wireless gamepad for smartphones that, instead of the traditional retractable mount design, offers to try out the form factor of a sliding panel in the style of the Nintendo Switch handheld console. The design of the device consists of two side panels with controls, between which there is a sliding slot for installing a smartphone. The notch expands 25 cm and can fit a small tablet with an 8- or 10-inch display, so you don't have to limit yourself to a smartphone. On the side of each panel are the main controls: on the left is a cross, which is responsible for the movement in the game, on the right are 4 main control buttons, on the sides are 4 auxiliary triggers / levers, and on top of one analog stick. Like the Nintendo Switch, the side panels can be removed or swapped. A Blue...tooth wireless interface is used to connect to a smartphone. Both mobile platforms (iOS and Android) are supported. The gamepad is powered by a built-in 380 mAh battery. Additional equipment includes a pair of built-in vibration motors.

Gamepad in the style of Nintendo Switch

The iPega PG-9167 Gamepad is a rare form of sliding controller inspired by the Nintendo Switch handheld console. It consists of two side panels with controls, each of which has a stick, side triggers and a block with buttons or a cross. Between them is a sliding groove into which a smartphone is inserted. However, it is not necessary to limit yourself to a smartphone - the groove expands by 25 cm and can fit a full-fledged tablet. This is a nice bonus to usability, since usually such sliding gamepads are only friendly with smartphones.

Interchangeable sidewalls

It is also convenient that, if necessary, one of the sidewalls with buttons can be removed and a regular plastic socket can be attached instead. It is convenient if the game has simple controls for a couple of buttons, and the rest only interfere. In this case, the vacated space can be used to connect charging or headphones. But the overall quality of the execution of the keys and sticks turned out to be at best a four with a minus. The sticks don't have the most impressive sensitivity and don't really like to work diagonally. In general, it’s not the most suitable option for shooters, literally in every second game the shooting is as chaotic as in Battlefield 2042. Another thing is indie games and console emulators, in which sticks are not really needed.

Built-in battery for 20 hours of operation

When connected wirelessly, the iPega PG-9167 is powered by a built-in 380 mAh battery, which, according to the manufacturer, is enough for 20 hours of continuous operation. The sleep mode helps save battery power, into which the gamepad automatically switches after 5 to 6 minutes of inactivity. But the built-in vibration motors, on the contrary, consume it faster. In addition to a smartphone, the gamepad can be connected via Bluetooth to a suitable smart TV. Support for iOS is claimed, but you should not count on it much, since Chinese gamepads are not very friendly with this platform and connect every other time.
