The Seagate brand has a subsidiary company, LaCie, which specializes in producing sophisticated and stylish premium HDDs. Their products often boast features like Thunderbolt, Porsche design, and are expensive. There is even a joke among photographers that every professional sooner or later comes to the point that he will have to spend money on LaCie.

Apple integration

Externally, the new LaCie Mobile Drive seems designed to work in conjunction with Apple technology. The case is made of durable aluminium with an original faceted shape, and the color is matched to the new MacBooks. The analogies with Apple continue in the future, as LaCie products are designed primarily to work with the company's iMac and MacBook. These HDDs support the Apple Thunderbolt data transfer standard and are easily integrated into the proprietary Apple Time Machine backup application. Of course, LaCie Mobile Drive is also compatible with Windows, but the integration there is not as deep.

5 TB storage

As for the 5 TB drive itself, its average speed in read and write benchmarks is 125 MB/s. This is a decent figure, which is enough to, for example, edit a video in FinalCut directly from the hard drive. On the other hand, similar results are shown by most modern external hard drives with drives spinning at 5400 rpm. Therefore, if you are not an Apple fan, you can safely look at a drive with similar characteristics and without Thunderbolt at a much nicer price.
