Weighty intellectual

If 10 years ago, the American company Sonos was known only for products for the pros, today it is considered to be the leader in the production of acoustic systems for the home, featuring innovative technologies adapted to the wide needs of the user.

The Sonos PLAY 5 audio system, which has become a more advanced version of its predecessor PLAY 3, received a number of features and characteristics that allowed it to compete with even more expensive and highly specialized products in the audio world.

Despite its compactness, the speaker is very weighty (4.15 kg), so it’s hardly worth taking it to a beach party or hiking, but thanks to its strict design and powerful sound, it can become a decent portable speaker for the home.

Behind a strict monolithic case made of matte plastic and a metal mesh, speakers are hidden, which received an independent amplifier: a 3.5-inch subwoofer and a pair of medium and low frequencies. The total acoustic power is 80 W, which is enough for a noisy disco.

Management is placed on the upper part of the case and is carried out by a minimum number of buttons: a volume rocker, an on / off key and a light indicator. On the rear panel there is a bass-reflex port, as well as a panel with connectors, among which the presence of two Ethernet ports is noteworthy if you decide to use the device as a network speaker.

Connection and settings

This model does not have a docking station, but you can control the acoustics using the remote control, which can be an iPhone, iPad, MacBook or Android device. To connect, you need to install the Sonos Controller app and, after launch, select the desired version of the speaker system (in this case, Play: 5).

If you want to connect several players at the same time, which is incredibly convenient for a large family with different musical preferences, then you can also add them to the application and delimit them with labels or give your own name.

The system has support for a number of popular music services and does an excellent job of importing music from a variety of media combines, including iTunes.

Sonos PLAY 5 also features wireless music streaming via AirPlay.

Sound

The sound of the speaker is very impressive and if you do not know that the playback is carried out by portable acoustics, you might think that large stationary speakers are playing. At maximum volume in a 25-metre room, glasses and dishes begin to tremble, but the device itself stands rooted to the spot on a fully rubberized base. Details are clearly audible throughout the entire range, and the part of each instrument has an even sound without “whiteouts” and overload.

The only thing that is very upsetting is the high price of the device, but the cost of acoustics is justified by high-quality assembly and powerful sound.

Additional features audio system Sonos Play 5:
  • Separate DSP processor for each speaker
  • Passive radiator that enhances the sound of low frequencies
  • The volume and mute buttons are located on top of the system
