Time proven option
Akai MPK-249 is not new, but still a very advanced and popular model of large format MIDI keyboard. It is equipped with a comfortable keyboard with increased key resistance, aftertouch function and built-in arpeggiator, as well as a serious block of additional controls. In the latter case, we are talking about 8 sliders, 8 rotary knobs, 16 MPC pads with Note Repeat function, and a DAW control unit with an informative monochrome display and Programme Change buttons. You can also connect two pedals to the instrument — for sustain and switching presets.
Child of keyboardist and producer Ableton
Given the richness of the settings and the fact that the pads can be reconfigured to trigger clips in Ableton or any other “clip” virtual studio, the Akai MPK-249 is essentially a hybrid of a conventional keyboard and the once popular Akai APC-40 function controller. This is the "grandfather" of Ableton Push, which brought Ableton control to a new level, allowing you to simultaneously control clips, virtual instruments, effects, and the DAW itself.
Almost perfect keyboard
In general, Akai MPK-249 would look like an almost perfect keyboard with no weak points, if not for one thing, but — the price. It will cost the potential owner almost $400 without offering him anything unique. Similar in functionality, but a little less pumped keyboards for 4 octaves with a transport block, faders, knobs and pads can be found almost 2 times cheaper. For example, Arturia KeyLab Essential 49 or Novation Launchkey 49 MK2.
Well, the keyboard turned out to be heavy, almost 6 kilograms. Therefore, it is likely that for a comfortable game you will also need a full-fledged keyboard stand.
