£174.74
An updated version of one of the lower models in the 2012 Denon family of integrated amplifiers. The model is two-channel, with a maximum output power of 70 watts per channel — the indicator is rather average, but at the same time the claimed signal-to-noise ratio is 105 dB. Quite traditionally, as for a modern model, it is possible to connect a vinyl disc player, for which a Phono port and an MM phono stage are implemented. 16 ohm speaker connection available. The model is presented in two colours.

The Denon PMA-520AE has won the hearts of music lovers since its early days on the market with its successful balance of performance, design and price.

Design Features

The amplifier in a classic rectangular form factor with dimensions of 43x31x12 cm weighs 6.8 kg and is available in black or silver. Four fairly massive supports — proprietary anti-resonant Direct Mechanical Ground chassis — provide the device with excellent stability.

All settings (5 knobs and three buttons) are placed on the front panel, intuitive and simple. The volume wheel is located in the centre, the bass, treble, balance settings are on the left, and the input signal selector is on the right. You can also control the amplifier from the included remote control.

Connectivity

On the rear panel, the Phono connector immediately catches the eye, indicating the presence of a regular MM-class phono stage. That is, you can connect a vinyl player to the amplifier and enjoy your favorite hits from the vintage collection. Next on the list: RCA inputs for CD, tuner, AUX and Network for a network player or DAC. There are also inputs / outputs for recording (Recorder), and two pairs of screw terminals for connecting speakers.

Separately, we were pleased with a switched socket for equipment connected with the amplifier, a gold- plated Jack 6.3 mm jack for headphones and a Remote Control input / output for controlling other components of the audio system, such as a subwoofer or receiver, provided, of course, that they have trigger inputs.

Hi-Fi sound

The device nominally outputs 45 watts per channel at a resistance of 8 ohms and 70 at 4 ohms, which is enough for a room of 20 – 25 m². It will be possible to swing floor hundred-watts without problems. The sound will be open and bright. The PMA-520AE uses Denon's proprietary High-Single-Push-Pull amplification circuitry to deliver low distortion, extended 5-100,000Hz frequency response, and high output current.

High-power filter capacitors in the power supply and separate power supplies for individual functional units provide the device with unprecedented operational reliability. But the non-removable power cord is a reminder that the device is still a low-cost one and this should be taken into account when assessing its capabilities.

In general, the Denon PMA-520AE turned out to be almost perfect for the first acquaintance with the world of Hi-Fi. It's reliable, simple, does the job well, and costs only $250.
