Turn on and play

Kingston is positioning the HyperX Savage EXO as the perfect partner for a gaming console. It is pre-formatted to exFAT and supports Plug N Play technology, allowing you to immediately use the SSD from a PC on Windows, Linux and Mac OS or PS4 and Xbox One game consoles. The compact dimensions of the model, combined with a capacity of 500 GB, allow you to easily carry a library of two dozen games in your pocket. And the unusual asymmetric design distinguishes it from the numerous grey and square external drives.

Speed up to 500MB/s

The HyperX Savage EXO uses Toshiba's 64-layer 3D NAND TLC flash memory and the popular Marvell 88SS1074 controller. The data transfer rate for read operations is claimed at the level of 500 MB / s, for writing — 480 MB / s. This is only slightly lower than classic SATA drives. However in fact, these figures are relevant for files up to 2 GB in size. When working with "large" files like raw videos, the recording speed will fluctuate between 115 — 195 MB / s. However, when connecting to game consoles, such drawdowns are far from being as relevant as when working with databases.

Connect at your convenience

In this case, the USB 3.1 Gen2 interface is used for data transfer. Backwards compatible with USB 3.0 is preserved, however, the device may require current up to 900 mA to power the device — the claimed value for the bus of this standard. Separately, I was pleased that the manufacturer equipped the drive with both a regular USB A cable and a more advanced USB-C. I didn’t like that the bundle does not include any utilities for encryption, backup or data recovery, which other manufacturers often supply their external drives with.
