Mister versatility
The iPega PG-9118 is one of the most versatile controllers we've tested. In its usual form, these are classic controllers a la DualShock, which you can connect to your computer and kick your friend's ass in the UFC or Injustice. But at the same time, with a flick of the wrist, the trousers turn into elegant shorts: in the centre of the device, a runway-like mount is hidden, which leans back and turns into a smartphone holder.
Good construction and controversial design
In most of these gamepads, it is rigidly mounted in the central panel of the case and hangs around idle if the smartphone is not connected. This is not very aesthetically pleasing and interferes with transportation. For example, in a backpack, such a holder can accidentally catch on something and break off. At the same time, the iPega PG-9118 mount seems reliable and is unlikely to fall apart after a couple of months of use with some Galaxy A71. It’s rather the design that confuses here, the gamepad turned out to be unusually colorful, the number of decorative elements goes off scale, the buttons glow like the centre of Tokyo, illuminated by a million banners, and gold-painted triggers and a cross — what is it all about? As if the designer had gone to smoke, and the layout was drawn by his 6-year-old son. I was also confused by the format of the cross, instead of standard arrows, a kind of “saucer” is used here, like in the expensive Xbox Elite tournament gamepad. In general, it will take some time to get used to.
Connecting to Windows, Android and iOS
However, for any adequate gamer, it is more important how it is played, and not how it looks. Here iPega PG-9118 did not let us down: it sits comfortably in the hands, soft-touch pads on the handles do not allow slipping if the palms are sweaty, and the buttons with triggers are elastic and responsive. At the same time, he is friends not only with Android devices, but with gadgets from Apple. From a PC, it is also on you, but during the tests it refused to work in xinput mode, which is why I had to fiddle with the Xbox controller emulator. Everything works via Bluetooth and is powered by a fairly capacious built-in battery, which is potentially enough for 10 hours of operation.
