The latest innovation from the Radeon RX 6700 XT
At the end of autumn 2023, breaking a long silence, AMD/Radeon released a series of new generation video cards based on the RDNA 3 architecture, the goal of which was to take a leading position in the market in opposition to NVIDIA in the high-end segment. Among the presented models, the Radeon RX 7800 XT from the middle+ class attracted special attention, standing out for its attractive balance between price and computing capabilities. This GPU can be seen as a direct successor to the 2021 Radeon RX 6700 XT, designed to compete with the GeForce 4070.
Focus on performance and cooling
The Radeon RX 7800 XT, like the older RX 7900 XT, offers a chiplet design, but with four MCD dies instead of six, and 48 MB of Infinity Cache versus 64 GB. However, thanks to architectural improvements, these changes did not affect the overall performance of the device. Radeon RX 7800 XT from PowerColor, Red Devil version, is equipped with an improved cooling system with three fans, two 8-pin connectors for additional power and dual BIOS for selecting operating frequencies. This product is a representative example of the Red Devil series, designed to provide efficient cooling and high overclocking capabilities.
16 GB GDDR6 video memory
In most gaming benchmarks at 2K+ultra settings, the Radeon RX 7800 XT demonstrates better performance than the GeForce RTX 4070 and, in some cases, comparable to the higher-end GeForce RTX 4070 Ti. However, the weak point remains performance when ray tracing is enabled. Unlike the GeForce 4000 series video cards, the PowerColor Radeon RX 7800 XT does not support frame generation. Instead, Radeon offers a free DLSS equivalent, FSR, which is currently limited to artificial upscaling and anti-aliasing features. But the RX 7800 XT stands out because it has 16 GB of video memory versus 10 GB, and a bus width of 256 bits versus 192 bits. As practice has shown, recent gaming titles such as Resident Evil 4 and Hogwarts Legacy are sensitive to the amount of video memory, and in the near future 12 GB should become the standard for games in 2K resolution.
