Record volumes
The Seagate Exos was one of the first server drives to offer potential buyers an impressive 16 GB capacity with a five-year warranty. This was achieved thanks to the use of a well-proven helium architecture (in fact, the working volume of the HDD is filled with helium), which also brought with it a bonus in the form of low operating temperatures. Under prolonged loads, the temperature of the hard drive rarely exceeded the threshold of 42 °C. On the contrary, power consumption has grown, although in the same Hitachi HGSTUltrastar He10 with a similar helium architecture, the power consumption figure is almost one and a half times lower: 6.8 W versus 9.5 W for Seagate Exos.
High speed performance
In addition to impressive volume, Seagate Exos X16 provides high-speed performance in its class. The average sequential write speed in our tests is about 118 Mbps. I was also pleased with the speed of work in small-block operations. Of course, this is far from the speed of modern SSDs, but much more interesting than seven-year-old server terabytes that set records in turtle races.
Universal hard drive
Although the whole series is positioned for corporate use in data centers, databases, etc., the test sample is more suitable for home use in a work or gaming PC with a huge library of games or a NAS server. There is only one connection option here - the usual SATA interface, and the more familiar server SAS can be found in older 14 and 16 TB models. A plus for using at home is also a low noise level, unlike the older model, the 10-gigabyte version has fewer platters and there is practically no hum from vibrations, only soft taps are heard when the head blocks are moved. But this is treated with a case with good sound insulation.
