AC1900 class

D-Link is one of the largest manufacturers of network equipment. The DIR-879 model is based on the Realtek platform, which is rarely found in routers of this level, equipped with gigabit network ports and belongs to the AC1900 class. There are no USB ports and some unusual features here, first of all, the router stands out for its high data transfer rate, support for functions like Beamforming and, of course, its appearance.

Bright

The router turned out to be bright both literally and figuratively. Most of the top cover of the case is made of glossy orange plastic, which contrasts nicely with the black plastic of the base and a small decorative insert with a nice pattern. 4 flat antennas with a pattern add colour, which, when turned off, are adjacent to the cover of the router, as if hugging it. And if you turn the DIR-879 over, then from below, instead of the usual plastic bottom, we will see large rubber legs resembling car wheels.

Wi-Fi speed up to 1300 Mbps

According to the passport, the router supports the IEEE 802.11ac standard, dual-band operation and provides a maximum speed of 1300 Mbps. The functional set here is quite heaped up: there is a MAC address filter, a pumped firewall, automatic firmware updates, a switch between “router” and “access point” modes, a separate button to turn off the Wi-Fi network, turn on the router on schedule and Beamforming. The latter, instead of uniform signal propagation, allows you to focus it in the direction of the desired device, improving the transmission quality. If several devices are connected to the network, then it looks at which devices respond faster and which ones slower, and depending on this determines the strength of the beam.

Coating quality

In fact, it turned out that the router had excellent coverage quality and there were no blind spots in the two-story cottage that needed to be “shooted into”. I also liked that the DIR-879 has a concise Russian-language firmware with support for automatic software updates. Therefore, the only controversial point is the design. The router looks great, but there are questions about how such a bright orange device will fit into the interior.
