Model overview based on user reviews
The Sony HXR-NX5E camcorder is generally well-regarded for its comprehensive set of features and convenient controls, making it suitable for various shooting conditions. It includes a complete set with a shotgun microphone and offers smooth white balance adjustment and excellent sound recording. However, users have noted that it is not true Full HD, with some reporting a blurry picture and poor performance in low light. The camera is described as semi-professional, with a servo-driven lens and operating speed. It is also power-hungry, with inaccurate battery life indicators. Despite these drawbacks, the camcorder offers operational control of shooting parameters and the ability to work on broadcasting with its SDI output. Some users appreciate its capabilities for parallel recording in different formats. Overall, while it may have been more relevant years ago, it can still be a functional choice if found used at a reasonable price.

I used this camera for 8 years (it's not produced anymore, I don't know why it's listed for sale, you can find it used). It fully delivered on its capabilities (now it's being used somewhere for broadcasts, sold it with around 2000 hours of usage). Some comments say it displays the charge incorrectly - use the original batteries and you’ll know the reduction in charge 8 minutes before it ends. There will be no charge drop when turning on/off. The 970s last up to 6 hours, tested over the years. In general, if you find one used for 50 - 70 thousand, it can still work quite well. Very convenient operational control of all shooting parameters. SDI output - the ability to work on broadcasting. When using a connected external 128 GB drive, the possibility of parallel recording in different formats. Not FullHD - it is honestly stated in the specifications, but who reads them. 50 fps only at 1280x720. use Sony HXR-NX5E more than year |
Second time, I wouldn't buy this camera... Everything is as advertised!!! Everything is really very good!!! Despite the category - professional, the camera is actually semi-professional, the lens is servo-driven, and the operating speed is servo-driven. |
I swapped two cameras with a friend for the duration of the filming (manya’s EX1). I couldn't get the picture to fit the way I would like. For all its management advantages, the camera is not worth the money. Any camera will produce a much cooler picture. Maybe 5-7 years ago the camera was relevant (when there was a fight against the DV format), but not now. It's good that I didn't buy it at the time. Lots of settings, complete set, including a shotgun microphone, separate charging, battery, etc. Convenient controls, everything is at your fingertips, it is possible to adjust presets in advance to suit various shooting conditions. Smooth white balance adjustment. Excellent sound recording with built-in microphones. In terms of functionality - excellent. Not true Full HD and this is the biggest drawback of this camera. The picture is blurry, the bokeh is "poor", objects lose clarity when zooming in. Doesn’t perform well in dark conditions, the real minimum illumination is 3 lux. At +12 dB, the grain is already noticeable. Autofocus works poorly in low light. External microphone connects very poorly, the on-camera light obstructs the display from opening. Poor access to quick deletion of the last recorded episode. No caching. Very power hungry - two 970 batteries aren't enough to shoot a wedding. The charging time indicator is inaccurate. Just turning it on and off consumes 30 minutes of charge. |
