Winter tyres (see “Season”), supplemented with studs — metal pins built into the tread. Studs improve traction on ice and packed snow: “biting” into such a surface, they do not allow the tyre to slide. On the other hand, on hard surfaces and in loose snow, studded tyres are noticeably inferior in efficiency to a non-studded ones.
