We've built in the same blend of power and tone that made the original Super Distortion® the worldwide standard for high-output humbuckers. We also tweaked the sound to take into account the fact that the Super Distortion® S will be installed in the classic slanted bridge position. The D Activator™ Bridge has an enriched harmonic quality and the notes want to sing. Both the D Activator™ Neck and Bridge pickups were designed to eliminate the sterile edginess commonly associated with active pickups. The D Activator™ Bridge pickup is about 25% louder than the D Activator™ Neck. Since we were developing both pickups as a set from the ground up, we adjusted the volume levels on the pickups so they are balanced. The Dark Matter 2™ represents a change in direction for Steve Vai towards a more organic, smoother sound with softer highs and less raw power. Single-coil pickup for bridge position of standard Tele-style guitars that has the same EQ as a vintage PAF, but also the classic Tele 6-magnet configuration – so it is not simply a PAF reduced to Tele size. The sound is more detailed and controlled. The plain strings both sing and sting, and the wound strings have a dynamic quality that is halfway between a humbucker and a P90.
