Since Christopher Columbus discovered the West Indies and claimed them for Spain in 1492, the Spanish and later the Danish, Dutch, English and French acquired great wealth from sugar and tobacco grown in the West Indies and dabbled in exotic native fruits, plants and even spices for their unusual fragrances.
