It made its first flight on May 22 1941 under the designation of Hawk 87 A. An order of 540 units went through Great Britain which will use it under the name Kitty hawk 1A as well as the Commonwealth count... moreries and a second of 1500 aircraft for the US Army Air Force which will use it under the name of Curtiss P-40 E and resell it to Great Britain under the lease-to-lease law. The P-40 E Kitty hawk 1A will be used by the armed forces of New Zealand South Africa Canada and the USSR. A total of 25 Kitty hawk 1A will be transferred from Great Britain to Australia. In early 1942 Australian territory was threatened by the Japanese advance an Australian squadron was made up of young pilots who trained before their assignment at Squadron 75 in Port Moresby New Guinea.
