In the early 6th century BC, the city of Corinth began to dominate the perfume trade in the ancient world. Ideally located between East and West, Corinthian perfumers exported their perfumed oils in stone vessels called alabastres or aryballoi. The perfumes and resins travelled in leather flasks on small boats along the coast of the Gulf of Corinth.
