Each string is made of sheep gut and is traditionally made by meticulously polishing and winding by hand. The E string being a high string is made of a steel core with gold plating around it. The remainder of the strings all features the handmade gut core. The A-string is wound with aluminium the D-string with a mixture of gold and aluminium and the G-string is wound with a mixture of gold and silver.
