Aizu lacquer is one of the oldest and most famous lacquerware techniques in Japan. Aizu lacquer, which originated in Aizu, an area with heavy snowfall, has a history of over 9000 years. All Aizu lacquer fountain pens are finished with clear lacquer by skilled craftsmen with many years of experience. Raw lacquer is pale yellow, but becomes transparent over time. The reason our craftsmen use transparent lacquer is that you can see the beautiful wood surface underneath. By applying multiple layers of lacquer, the fountain pen becomes even more lustrous over the course of six months or a year, revealing the beautiful texture of natural wood. *Aizu lacquer fountain pens are made with a ``unpainted'' finish (lacquer is simply applied without polishing), so uneven coating may be seen.
