While the Kagero is recognized as an effective destroyer design she like many of her colleagues did mainly escort and shepherd work toward her target as she did in the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Later in the war she saw action on the Tokyo Express runs when destroyers were commissioned to supply and reinforce Japanese garrisons in the Solomon Islands.
