AJ Eklipta was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1959 for Rødovre City Hall. For this project, two different sizes were manufactured: Ø350mm and Ø450mm. They were used indoors by staircases and outdoors as wall lamps. Later a Ø220mm version was designed for St Catherine’s College in England. When Arne Jacobsen himself used the fixture for staircases, he always preferred the larger version. Today the fixture is used all over the world in a range of architectural contexts. Again a design icon of format – the ultimate ceiling lamp. The AJ Eklipta wall lamp emits a soft and diffuse light. The glass is constructed to provide a uniformly illuminated surface. The hand-blown shade in three layers of opal glass has a clear edge, which creates a halo of light around the fixture on the AJ Eklipta wall mounted lamp. AJ Eklipta Ø220 is now delivered with a special matte glass insert to ensure that the use of clear halogen bulbs continues to provide a beautiful and uniform light. These inserts can be ordered for installation on older lamps. Note that the ceiling version is delivered without cable holes on the side of the back box. Arne Jacobsen was a world-famous modern Danish architect. He has created several buildings but is mostly known for his furniture and lamp design. Among others he designed the Swan chair, Egg chair and AJ lamps. He was a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, during which time he influenced an entire generation of Danish architects.
