It was presented in the spring of 1974 and immediately became a very successful product. The first series (1974-1983) adopted technical solutions highly appreciated by the market of the time: water-cooled front engine, front-wheel drive, solid and robust body with a functional yet attractive design. The good quality/price ratio was the real "competitive leverage" that decreed the success of Golf. At the Frankfurt Motor Show, in 1975, the Golf GTI sports version adopted the 1,600 cc 110 hp engine capable of delivering high performance was presented. The following year the mass production of the Golf GTI was started, which in just two months achieved an excellent commercial result in numerous European and non-European countries. The version used by the German Police during the 1970s and early 1980s is a symbol of everyday life of that historical period.
