These sections can rotate, enabling adjustments in the user's position, such as transitioning from a lying position to a semi-sitting one or flexing their extended legs. In advanced models, the sections are electrically powered, allowing effortless position adjustments through a remote control.

Hospital beds come in various specialized options, with functional beds being the most common. These are designed for stable patients without emergency needs and often include additional features like a hanging handle for easier movement in bed, a removable or folding table, etc. On the other hand, intensive care beds, designed for emergency care departments, have a unique design and a more extensive range of functions. They are typically made of non-spring materials, ideal for manual cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and may feature folding handrails for patient safety, a stand for intravenous injections, a compartment for x-ray cassettes enabling on-bed X-rays, and other specialized equipment.

There are other rarer and more specific varieties of hospital beds - for example, models for psychiatric and drug treatment facilities, which have the option of installing straps to secure troubled patients.
