Firmware updates released by the manufacturer perform two main functions: they fix bugs found in previous versions, and they may also introduce new features that were not previously provided. And some models may even allow the use of third-party firmware written by enthusiasts (although you should be careful when doing this).

The upgradeability is especially important for models with complex control electronics such as variable watts (see "Battery Mod").
