Actually, these steps replace the classic pedals in this case: by pressing with their feet, the athlete alternately moves them down. Thus, the natural movement on the stairs is recreated as accurately as possible; at the same time, the escalator canvas is designed in such a way as to minimize undesirable loads on the joints.
