Banjo
— a stringed instrument, originally popular in jazz bands, and today also used in traditional music of North America (country, bluegrass). Technically, it is a kind of mandolin, it differs from it in a more sonorous and sharp sound, as well as in some design features — for example, the role of the top deck is played by a stretched membrane, which makes the body of the banjo resemble a drum. Different types of banjo can have from 4 to 9 strings, but 5 is considered the classic version. Also note that the strings for this instrument often have “tin” windings — classic (tin) bronze, which is almost never found in other types of strings.
