Slim and light aluminium body
The Asus ZenBook Pro UX550VD is one of the best laptops on the market in terms of size and performance. With a case thickness of 18.9 mm and a weight of 1.8 kg, a powerful hardware is hidden inside, which equally makes it both a performant work laptop and a full-fledged gaming station.
Reliable build
I am glad that this lightness of the laptop did not affect the structural strength in any way: the case is made of a single billet of aluminium and assembled to last. Also, the frameless design has a positive effect on the dimensions. The 15-inch display is surrounded by a very thin bezel on the top and sides, and there is a wider strip at the bottom with the Asus logo. Because of this, the sleek ZenBook is often compared to a MacBook in reviews.
There is not much memory
The ZenBook Pro is powered by a quad-core Core i5 processor (2.5GHz — 3.5GHz), 16GB of RAM, a fast and roomy 512 SSD drive, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 gaming graphics card with an excellent 4GB of video memory. This filling allows you to comfortably play voracious toys or work in Photoshop, Cubase and other professional software.
The devil is in the details
Overall, with the ZenBook Pro UX550VD, the devil is in the details. This includes a well-thought-out cooling system, a four-speaker stereo system from Harman Kardon, a battery that can last about 14 hours, an integrated fingerprint scanner, fast charging, modern USB-C ports and much more. Perhaps the only fly in the ointment in this barrel of honey is a not very convenient keyboard layout with a flattened block of arrows and a power button, which for some reason is located next to the Backspace.

Modern technology does not stand still, and this model is a clear embodiment of that thesis. A high-performance quad-core processor with a frequency of up to 3.8 GHz in a sleek metal case weighing 1800 grams? Yes, please! The performance of this laptop is very solid. I occasionally review models and medium-complexity assemblies in SolidWorks at home, and I can confidently say it performs on par with my work desktop equipped with an i5-3570, which is a pretty fast desktop processor. The pre-installed 16GB of RAM is sufficient for any home and work tasks. I have never even come close to reaching its limit. Instead of a hard drive, there is a 512GB SSD, which significantly speeds up the loading of the pre-installed operating system and applications. A few words must be said about the graphics card. I was contemplating whether I needed it, but since playing World of Warships (WoWs) on integrated graphics is impossible, I decided to go for it. The GeForce GTX 1050 with 4GB of dedicated memory is frankly great. WoWs runs almost at maximum settings, and in this quality, I saw the game in a new light (previously played on a desktop with medium graphic settings on a GeForce GTX 650 Ti). In general, the money was well spent, and the overall impression is pleasant. Under load, for instance during video encoding, the cooling system's operation is distinctly audible. During the day, with background noise, it's not too important, but late in the evening the fan noise can be heard halfway across the apartment. Fingerprints accumulate on the metal around the keyboard. I think the manufacturer could have considered this aspect by applying some special coating or finish there. Honestly, I didn't like the VGA-resolution webcam; it seems like the developers wanted to cut costs on it (!) and installed one of the cheapest modules. |
