Model overview based on user reviews
The Canon Speedlite 580EX II is a highly regarded flash unit, praised for its powerful performance and large illumination range, making it ideal for shooting in enclosed spaces and variable lighting conditions like discos and concerts. Users appreciate its fast reloading time and the ability to control multiple groups of flashes with individual settings. However, a common drawback noted is the absence of a low battery charge indicator, which can be inconvenient during extended use. While it excels for experienced photographers, beginners might find the Canon Speedlite 430EX II a more suitable and affordable option. Overall, the 580EX II is a worthwhile investment for those using compatible Canon cameras, particularly models from the 7D series and above.

excellent device, happy with the purchase
that's it, after I tried to use the 430 (it turned up from a friend), I realized that I had not wasted my money on the 580 in vain. better in all respects, noticeable on reloading, and mounting (rubberized)
the battery charge indicator is really missing, this is really the problem with this flash

If you are an experienced enthusiast - don't hesitate to buy this flash, it is a very necessary and indispensable item. But if you are a beginner enthusiast, it would be better to purchase a Canon Speedlite 430EX II flash for now. It's a flash with medium power at a reasonable price.
Powerful flash. Large illumination range. An additional focusing beam allows the camera to focus faster and capture important shots. The flash is ideal for shooting in enclosed spaces and with variable lighting (discos, concerts).
There is no low battery indicator.

From the manufacturer's press release:

The Speedlite 580EX II attaches to the EOS-1D Mark III and can be used in all weather conditions. It can also be controlled via the camera menu. Compared to its predecessor, the Speedlite 580 EX, the new flash features faster recycling times and a more robust design. The new off-camera shoe cable, compact battery pack, and Speedlite mount (also introduced today) are all sealed against dust and moisture when shooting with an off-camera shoe.

The Speedlite 580EX II features many improvements over its predecessor. Flash recycling is silent and 20% faster. A protective coating ensures that the WFT-E2 Wireless File Transmitter, which attaches to the EOS-1D Mark III, is as weather- and dust-resistant as the camera itself. A new metal flash base and contacts provide a more secure connection between camera and flash, while a quick-release mechanism reduces wear on both units. The flash head has a wide zoom range (24-105mm), and a built-in light diffusion panel provides a wider coverage angle (up to 14mm).

The new OC-E3 Off-Camera Shoe Cable, CP-E4 Compact Battery Pack and SB-E2 Speedlite Mount are also weather and dust resistant, giving photographers a complete system that allows them to use their off-camera flash even in challenging weather conditions.
