As part of the XPS line, Dell engineers managed to find a delicate balance between performance, convenience, "premium" and price. Released in summer 2020, the XPS 15 3790 aims to retain the best features of the series' standard laptops, but in a convertible chassis. At the same time, it is thinner, quieter and cooler, but not inferior in performance to the standard XPS 15.
Core i7 1065G7 and Intel Iris G7 graphics card
The heart of the laptop is the new high-performance Core i7 1065G7 processor, which demonstrates excellent performance and generates minimal heat. It is complemented by 8 GB of DDR4 RAM (3733 MHz versus the standard 2133 MHz) and a fast 256 GB NVMe SSD. There could be more RAM, but in general, this hardware is at the level of entry-level gaming laptops. The graphics card here is unusual - together with a laptop, we finally managed to test the new Iris G7 discrete video core with which the guys from Intel threaten to break AMD Vega. As the tests showed, the company's engineers did not try in vain: the G7 runs at the same speed as the discrete Nvidia GeForce MX250. That is, it not only easily handles with online toys like Fortnite and WOT, but also gives out an average of 30 FPS in the third Witcher at Full HD resolution and medium graphics settings.
Total 2 USB ports
However, the success of a laptop is determined not only by hardware, after all, this is not a stationary computer. And in this regard, the Dell XPS is very good, but still not perfect. The branded backlit keyboard with Maglev mechanism evokes the same pleasant emotions as before, but because of the reduced dimensions of the model, the keys are scattered rather heapily. And USB-C ports support Thunderbolt and fast charging, but there are only two ports. All according to the precepts of Apple - if you want to connect peripherals, buy a USB hub. This is where the ambiguous moments end and there remains a solid positive.
Excellent display with HDR10 support with Dolby Vision
The metal case turned out to be thin, light and compact (13 mm with a weight of 1.33 kg), and the carbon inserts inside are not afraid of fingerprints. The Wi-Fi 6-enabled wireless module gives a good start to the future, the built-in battery lasts up to 9 hours, and the Realtek ALC3281-CG audio path has proven itself well in Alienware gaming laptops. Well, and most importantly, the 13.4-inch touch screen came out just a feast for the eyes. It boasts not only excellent responsiveness, high contrast and excellent colour reproduction (100% sRGB), but also support for newfangled HDR10 and Dolby Vision video formats, which are more commonly seen in TV panels than laptop displays.
