The Surface line is not very common in our area, but this does not mean that they are bad. The Surface Laptop is a great alternative to the MacBook with its macOS.
Peculiarities
Windows 10S is installed on board “out of the box” — this is a somewhat stripped-down version of the usual dozen. The main feature is the installation of software exclusively from the Windows Store, but it can be easily turned into a full-fledged Windows 10 without any problems.
Design
His design is unique. Topcase or "work surface" is covered with Alcantara (artificial suede), which allows you to print with particular comfort. The keyboard has good travel and backlighting with multiple brightness levels. The cover is somewhat thicker than the competition, but all this for the sake of structural rigidity and reliability.
Screen
The screen is made using IPS technology with a diagonal of 13.5” and has a resolution of 2256x1504 pixels. Colour rendition and viewing angles at the level of retina displays from Apple. It is comfortable to work on a sunny day. A nice feature is the presence of a light sensor — the computer itself adjusts the brightness of the screen to the ambient light. All this “joy” is covered with third-generation Gorilla Glass.
Iron
On the market at the moment there are modifications with a dual-core Core i5 7200U clocked at up to 2.5 GHz, 4 or 8 GB of RAM and a 128 or 256 GB SSD drive. There is enough performance even for old toys, but this is not what it was created for. We recommend taking the version with 8 GB of RAM, because Windows, even for everyday tasks, requires a large amount of RAM.
Of the troubles, I would like to note the lack of USB type C, but there is a mini DisplayPort and a full-fledged USB 3.0. Regarding the SSD drive, too, not everything is so simple. Its read and write speeds are less than 500 Mbps, which is lower than many of its competitors.
Outcome
Battery life in everyday use is slightly higher than that of competitors, an average of 9 – 10 hours.
Its main advantage over other Windows ultrabooks is optimization — the system works extremely smoothly and stably. A distinctive feature is Surface Connect — this is a charging connector into which the power cord is not inserted, but held by magnets (similar to Apple's once great MagSafe). This allows, in case the power cord is touched, it simply “unfastens” and your precious work tool remains unharmed.
