For intensive workload in data centers
A couple of years ago, Toshiba introduced a line of Enterprise Capacity series hard drives designed for intensive workloads in data centers, enterprise arrays and industrial server rooms. One of the advantages of the novelty was the increased storage capacity — if most competitors in the server HDD environment mainly offer 10-14 TB models, then the older Enterprise boasts 16 TB storage. However, we had a 10 GB model on the test, and we will deal with it.
Workload 550 TB per year
Like many modern server hard drives, the model allows you to choose between two types of connections (SATA and SAS) and has increased reliability, which ensures round-the-clock operation with a workload of 550 TB / year, and an MTBF of 2.5 million hours. This is about 10 times more than a regular "home" hard drive. So that words do not diverge from deeds, instead of a 3-year warranty, Toshiba gives all 5 years. And the company puts three things into the term “increased reliability”. First, a comprehensive system for reducing vibration, which has sensors to detect the slightest shaking and angular vibration sensors that dampen this vibration, preventing it from spreading throughout the compartment.
Moderately quiet and cold
The second feature is the use of a 9-disk helium design, which reduces heat during continuous operation and improves overall energy efficiency. And this is not just a phrase for an advertising booklet, Enterprise Capacity really consumes little energy, heats up a little (43 – 44 °C at room temperature) and does not make much noise. Definitely a big improvement over the MG04, which, despite being air-cooled, ran like hell. Well, the third method of improving reliability is Persistent Write Cache technology, which stores important data in a dynamic cache based on flash memory in case of a power outage. As soon as power is restored, the data from the cache is immediately written to disk. Summing up, Toshiba turned out to be a really cool server hard drive with a bunch of pluses and without a single drawback. Plus, it's inexpensive.
