Model overview based on user reviews
The WD Red Pro series offers a range of capacities, including 6TB and 8TB options, known for their best-in-class speed. However, users have noted that these drives can become quite hot, with temperatures reaching up to 55 degrees in NAS systems, and they can be noisy, producing a noticeable buzz or crackling sound. This noise level, around 37 dB, might be disruptive for home use, especially if placed near sleeping areas. Despite these drawbacks, the drives are appreciated for their performance, and some users have observed improvements in newer models, possibly due to firmware updates. Overall, the WD Red Pro is a solid choice for those prioritizing speed and capacity, provided the noise and heat are manageable in their setup.
Pros
Cons
If a noise level of 37 dB is not critical, and good airflow because the best among 6TB does not exist yet. There are 3 HDDs of 6TB released in March 2017 - they show a heating of 53-55 degrees, a few days ago I bought another one made in May 2017 with a sensor heating up to 48 degrees, what is this - probably they changed the firmware?? The main thing is the speed of work - best in class 6 TB Strong heating, in NAS Asustor 6210T up to 55 degrees; Under heavy load, it's somewhat noisy for home use - it buzzes loudly use WD Red Pro month or more |
Purchased the WD4003FFBX at the beginning of the year in a used condition with minimal operating hours. It performs well in operation. Compared to the Toshiba x300 4Tb, the Toshiba vibrates more, but during read-write moments, the knocking from the WD is unpleasant, which subjectively feels even worse than the Toshiba. CMR, support for different sector sizes (i.e., the disk is converted to 4kn) Noisier during intensive work moments than the Toshiba X300 |
The 8TB drive is very noisy. It crackles during use. If you are buying it for a home NAS, place it somewhere away from where someone sleeps. Volume Noise |
