Inexpensive subwoofer for a small room

Yamaha is a leader in the production of musical instruments and equipment for consumer and professional use, and subwoofers occupy not the last place in its range. The NS-SW100 active subwoofer model has a modest power reserve and is positioned as an inexpensive solution for a small room where the usual 100-odd watts will be superfluous.

The magic of minimalism

The subic received a solid fiberboard bass-reflex case in black with dimensions of 35x35x41 cm and a weight of 12 kg, which is installed directly on the floor without any legs or stands. And this, perhaps, is the main disadvantage, since without legs and a special stand, the sound is not what you want. There are controls on the back panel, an unusual bass-reflex port on the side, a small logo on the front panel and that's it. In general, the design turned out to be as simple and concise as possible, and the assembly is reliable. The subwoofer has a 10-inch magnetically shielded cone driver, 50 W output power, 25 — 180 Hz bass range and a volume control knob.

Unusual twisted bass reflex

But this kid inherited several useful features from more expensive models. The first is called the Twisted Flare Port and is essentially a slightly twisted bass reflex horn that dissipates air turbulence formed at the edges of the port, smoothing the airflow and reducing the level of extraneous noise. And the Advanced YST 2 feature optimizes the effective impedance of the speaker, thereby improving the linearity of the sound. As for the nature of the sound, you should not expect furious bass from the NS-SW100, which make even an old heavy cabinet shake. On the contrary, the NS-SW100 sounds very neat and unobtrusive, as if you can't hear it, but once you turn it off, the difference becomes obvious. The main thing is not to twist the sound to the maximum, otherwise it will slightly wheeze and choke.
