Keyboards: specifications, types

In box

In addition to pure keyboards, there are keyboard + mouse sets on the modern market. Usually, these are wireless devices with a radio channel connection (see "Connection type"), but there are also wired sets. Anyway, buying a set may be more convenient than buying each item separately: for example, when connected via radio, the keyboard and mouse from one set will use one adapter to work. On the other hand, a complete mouse may not be suitable, and sometimes it's easier to choose a "rodent" separately.

Connection

Wired. Connection using a cable with one or another type of connector — most often USB, less often PS/2 or a proprietary plug (see "Connection interface"). Wired keyboards are notable for their low cost and overall convenience — in the sense that they do not require batteries and the operating time is unlimited. However the wire limits mobility; however, given that most often the keyboard is used in close proximity to the computer, this shortcoming cannot be called critical.

Radio. Wireless connection over the air, usually through a wireless adapter connected to a computer via a USB port. The main advantage of this option can be called the actual absence of a wire; while the communication range is usually several metres, which gives freedom of movement and even allows you to use the keyboard as a "computer remote control". On the other hand, wireless models are much more expensive than wired ones, and their operation requires separate power supply from batteries or a rechargeable battery, the charge of which is limited — accordingly, the continuous operation time is limited. Separately, we note that this option is designed mainly for stationary PCs; if a wireless keyboard is needed for a laptop, it is better to pay attention to Bluetooth models (see below).

Bluetooth. Another way to wir...elessly connect keyboards. Technically, Bluetooth is based on radio waves, but this technology has its own characteristics, so it is listed separately from the "normal" radio connection (see above). The main one of these features is that many models of modern electronics (almost all laptops and tablets, some PCs, etc.) are equipped with built-in Bluetooth modules, which allows you to connect such keyboards without using additional adapters. In addition, the range of such a connection is officially at least 10 m (in fact, of course, it depends on obstacles, interference, etc.). It is this option that will be optimal if you need a wireless keyboard for a Bluetooth-enabled device.

— Bluetooth / radio. Wireless keyboards that can connect both via Bluetooth and radio. See above for more details on each of these options. Also note here that such a keyboard is usually connected directly to a Bluetooth device (for example, a laptop), and if the computer does not support Bluetooth, you can connect a USB adapter to it and use a radio connection. Thus, the keyboard is as versatile as possible in connection. However, such versatility significantly affects the cost, and is required not so often; so this option is not widely used.

— Bluetooth / radio / wired. Keyboards that support all three connection methods described above. This is the most versatile option, giving the user the freedom to choose for different situations. For example, while playing a game or watching a movie, you can sit in a comfortable chair away from the screen by connecting the device wirelessly, and when typing or surfing the Internet, you can move to the table and use the wire, saving battery power. At the same time, such versatility is not often required and is expensive, so models with this type of connection are not popular either.

Bluetooth version

A version of the "blue tooth" technology for connecting the wireless keyboard to other devices from the outside as a manipulator. The higher its serial number, the more stable and noise-proof connection is provided. At the moment, Bluetooth v 5 is the most advanced standard in keyboards.

Multi-Device

The keyboard's ability to quickly switch between multiple devices. Multi-Device allows you to simultaneously work with a tablet, TV, and other devices with one keyboard.

Cable length

The length of the cable that the keyboard is equipped with for wired connection (see "Connection type").

When choosing this parameter, you should first of all take into account the distance from the device to the connection port: a cable that is too short may simply not reach the connector, and a cable that is too long may get confused at hand and create inconvenience. As for specific values, the reference length is 1.8 m. However, there are cables both shorter and longer.

Range

The range of the wireless connection provided by the keyboard (see "Connection Type").

Almost all modern wireless models work confidently at a distance of at least 2 - 3 meters. So you need to pay attention to this parameter mainly when the keyboard is planned to be used at a greater distance from the computer. At the same time, when evaluating the range, it should be borne in mind that it is indicated for ideal conditions: the absence of interference and obstacles in the signal path, the battery is fully charged, etc. In practice, the communication range may be somewhat less, so when choosing, it is worth taking a certain margin. Nevertheless, according to the declared range, it is quite possible to evaluate the practical capabilities of different models and compare them with each other.

Type

Game. Keyboards designed for use in computer games. Outwardly, they are distinguished by a characteristic design, often quite original and aggressive; some key keys, such as WASD, may be highlighted in colour. In addition, the design may provide various special equipment — additional programmable keys, headphone and microphone jacks, a screen with the ability to display in-game chat, etc. Some of these models are created for specific popular games. Keypads are a separate type of gaming keyboards (see "Format").

Ergonomic. Ergonomic keyboards are distinguished by a specific layout aimed at making long-term work on them as comfortable as possible. The keys of such keyboards may not be located straight, but in an arc, have a rhombic shape, the alphabetic part of the keyboard itself can be divided into two parts located at an angle to each other, etc. Such design solutions provide a more natural position of the hands during work, which helps to reduce fatigue.

For tablets. Keyboards specially designed for use with Tablet PCs. They can have special mounts and act as a docking station — with such a keyboard, the tablet practically turns into a netbook, up to the ability to fold the entire structure in the manner of a regular laptop (for ease of transportation and protection of the display from damage). Some models are ini...tially optimized for certain tablets. Because the size of modern tablets rarely exceeds 10", then the keyboards for them are made compact (see "Format").

Keyboard case. Models that combine the functions of a protective case and a keyboard for entering texts or commands in one bottle. As a rule, keyboard cases are produced for certain tablet models, thereby expanding the functionality of tablet computers. When closed, such accessories tightly fit the tablet body and protect it from damage during transportation. According to the connection methods, keyboard cases can use a Bluetooth connection, proprietary connectors or USB.

For TV. Keyboards designed for use with Smart TVs. These TVs can connect to the Internet and use various network services, and many of them allow you to install additional applications. Both may require a full keyboard — for example, with its help it is convenient to enter text in Skype, search for content by name, or play some games. Common features of "TV" keyboards are, firstly, a compact format (see below), secondly, wireless connection (in most cases; see "Type of connection"), thirdly, the presence of additional buttons and other controls to operate individual TV functions. When choosing such a model, it is worth clarifying its compatibility with a particular TV.

Flexible. Keyboards made of elastic materials and having a flexible body — most often in the form of a rubber "mat" with protrusion keys. Such models are extremely easy to transport: a flexible design makes it easy to squeeze the keyboard between other things, bend it, or even roll it up. Another advantage is that the “board” can be easily made moisture resistant (although this is not necessary in this case). At the same time, in terms of the “response” of the keys, a flexible keyboard can differ markedly from more traditional ones, and it may take some getting used to working on it. And in terms of format (see below), such models are most often compact.

Compatibility

Compatibility of the keyboard case with a specific tablet model. Note that such accessories can only be combined with the corresponding gadgets, since they are initially “tailored” to the features of a particular device: the shape and dimensions of the case, the location of connectors, buttons, cameras, etc.

Form factor

Traditional keyboards are divided into three main varieties — full-size, compact and ultra-compact. The main difference between them is that full-size models have a Num-block — an additional block with numeric keys and arithmetic signs. Compact models, respectively, do not have a num-block, and in ultra-compact models, the arrow block is either completely absent or located under the Enter key in the form of very small keys.

And full-size, and compact, and ultra-compact keyboards can have different types of layouts. At the same time, the arrangement of letters and numbers above the letters in all types of layouts is the same, the differences are in the shape and position of additional keys (special characters like backslash, system control, modifiers like Shift and Alt, etc.). Here are the most popular options:

ANSI. The "American" layout format, the distinguishing features of which are, in particular, the same width of both Shift keys, the same labeling and assignment of the Alt keys, the single-row Enter key and the backslash located above it (which is often made slightly longer than the standard key).

ISO. "European" layout format. The Enter key occupies two rows, while at the top it is slightly longer than at the bottom; the left Shift is shorter than the right one, ther...e is a backslash next to it; next to the bottom of the Enter may be a second backslash or other special character key; the right Alt is designated as Alt Gr and is intended for entering additional characters in European languages.

K.S. The "Korean" keyboard layout provides a double-row Enter, as in the ISO described above, however, in this case, the lower part of the Enter is made longer, and not the upper one. The backslash is above Enter, next to Backspace, and Backspace itself is the same length as standard keys (that is, noticeably shorter than in other layouts).

JIS. Keyboards with a "Japanese" layout have a double-row Enter with an increased length of the upper half — like the ISO described above. However, in this case, the backslash is not located on the left side of the keyboard, but on the right, next to Enter (where an additional symbol key can be located in ISO). Additional character keys may be provided — next to Backspace (as in KS) and/or to the left of the right Shift. In addition, the right Alt can be formatted as Alt Gr.

In addition to compact and full-size, there are also non-traditional keyboard formats:

Num-block. Separately made block of numeric keys. With the help of such a device, you can, in particular, turn a compact keyboard into a full-size one. Among other things, this combination can be useful for travel: packing a Num-block separately from the keyboard is easier than finding a place for a full-sized "board". Another option for using the Num-block is to connect to a cash register, terminal, etc. to work as a calculator keyboard or in a similar capacity.

— Keypad. A specialized device in the form of a small (approximately 15 – 20 keys) keyboard under one hand; usually, it is complemented by an arm rest, and often also by side buttons for the thumb. Such devices are especially convenient for games and are mainly used in them — certain game actions can be attached to the keypad buttons (including those that are usually implemented through the menu or a key combination on a standard keyboard). The keypad can both complement the main keyboard and serve as a completely separate game pad.

— Non-standard. Non-standard format keyboards that do not belong to any of the varieties described above. The specific design and use of such devices may vary. So, these can be game models in the form of the left half of a standard keyboard (this part is mainly used in games); ultra-compact models for tablets (see "In the direction"); keyboards for TVs, supplemented with special buttons and designed to be held in two hands in the manner of a gamepad, etc.

Key profile

The distance that the key travels when pressed — from the initial position to touching the contacts and sending the "command". Indicated as high or low. Keyboards with low key travel(3 mm or less) are considered to be more comfortable for fast input (such as fast typing). However, the best option largely depends on the habits and preferences of a particular user.

Key type

Classic type. Keyboard with keys of the usual square and rectangular shape, with a small distance between them. Such keys usually expand downwards so that the gaps between them are as small as possible.

Island type. Also known as "soaring" or chiclet. This is a keyboard in which each key is installed in a separate hole at a small distance from the others. Island models are more convenient than classical ones in that they are less likely to accidentally press the adjacent key. On the other hand, they are more difficult to clean: debris that has clogged into the gap between the key and the “board” itself is quite difficult to clean out, while contamination can create problems in operation.

On the practical side, the choice of a particular type of keys depends primarily on the personal preferences of the user.

Switch technology

Membrane. The name of this type is due to the fact that the contacts under each key are made in the form of two membranes — conductive disks on a flexible film. The return of the keys to their original position after pressing is ensured by the elasticity of the membranes. This design is characterized by low cost and low noise level; in addition, such keyboards are quite resistant to liquid spills (although this is still not recommended). Of the shortcomings, it is worth noting the relatively low durability — 3-4 times lower than that of mechanical ones. In addition, as the keys of this type wear out, the force required to press decreases, they begin to “fall through” under the fingers (“fatigue effect”).

Mechanical. In this design, springs are used to return the key to its original position after being pressed. Mechanical keyboards are considered more advanced than membrane keyboards: they are more reliable and durable, almost do not lose properties as they wear out, and give a clear tactile feedback. The overall noise level is often higher than that of membrane ones, however, many attribute a characteristic click with each press to the advantages of such models; in addition, completely silent mechanical switches are also available. But of the unequivocal disadvantages, one can name the high cost and sensitivity to spilling liquid (although a mechanical keyboard can also be made waterproof)....r>
Optical-mechanical. A variation of the mechanical keyboards described above, in which each key is equipped not with a traditional pair of contacts, but with an optical switch in the form of a sensor that receives an infrared beam; when you press the key, this beam is blocked, which serves as a signal for operation. One of the key advantages of such switches is a very high response speed (fractions of a millisecond); this moment is not critical for domestic use, but it can be fundamental for gamers-enthusiasts and e-sportsmen. In addition, the absence of electrical contacts that are prone to wear and oxidize has a positive effect on durability. And although initially the “optics” are more complicated than classic systems with contacts, however, in gaming keyboards, optical-mechanical switches are often even cheaper than pure “mechanics”. And the fact that this option is relatively rare is primarily due to the fact that optical technology appeared not so long ago and is only gaining popularity.

Membrane + mechanical. A layout in which most of the keys have a membrane design, and some, the most "responsible" ones, are mechanical. About the features of both options, see above, and a similar combination of them is found mainly in gaming keyboards. In this case, the "mechanics" are usually used on the traditional combination of WASD plus on the surrounding keys Q, E, R and F.

— Mechanical-membrane. A hybrid design that combines elements of mechanical and membrane keyboards (see above for more on both). In this case, these features are combined in each individual key. Usually, under each button in such keyboards there is a membrane, however, inside this membrane is not just a pair of contacts, but a mechanical spring system. Thus, this design combines the advantages of both options. At the same time, mechanical-membrane systems are very expensive. Therefore, their main scope is high-end gaming keyboards, and even among such devices this option is quite rare.

— Scissor. A slightly modified version of membrane keyboards (see the relevant paragraph), in which the flexible membrane on each key is supplemented by a two-piece mechanism fastened together in the form of scissors. One of the main features of scissor keyboards is the low key travel (noticeably lower than that of membrane keyboards). Also, this design is less demanding on accuracy, it allows you to achieve a clear pressing regardless of where the finger hit — in the centre or on the edge of the key. The service life of the "scissors" is large; they are more difficult to clean, however, they become dirty much more slowly than "membranes". Among the disadvantages of this option, a slightly increased noise level during operation can be noted — due to the clicking of scissor mechanisms.

Switches

The model of switches (switches) used in the keyboard - switching mechanisms installed under each individual key. These details are given if the design uses advanced mechanics, positioned as a better option than traditional switches. Mostly gaming keyboards are equipped with such mechanics.

The most popular switch brands in our time are Cherry MX, considered the "classic of the genre" for high-quality mechanics; Gateron, practically not inferior to him; not so advanced, but also cheaper Kailh and Razer, as well as ultra-budget Outemu. For all these brands, different types of switches have a different stem color, which can be used to determine the features of the keyboard. It is also worth saying that modern mechanical switches are divided into three main varieties: linear, tactile and clicky.

- Linear. Such solutions are closest to conventional membrane keyboards: the key travel is uniform along the entire length, with minimal resistance and the absence of a clear actuation point. There is an opinion that the linear "mechanics" is best suited for games where you have to deal with fast and frequent clicks; however, in practice, this moment largely depends on the personal tastes of the u...ser, nothing prevents the use of such keyboards for working with texts.

- Tactile. Switches with a clearly defined actuation point - a kind of barrier to the path of the key. Such a "barrier" allows you to clearly determine by touch whether the key has worked or not. Tactile keyboards are valued primarily by tech who have to type large volumes of texts.

- Tactile-auditory (Clicky). In such switches, the actuation point is felt not only by touch, but also by ear: the actuation of the key is accompanied by a clearly audible click, which is often compared to the sound of the keys of a typewriter. Due to this, this option is also very popular among users dealing with texts. Some people consider switches of this type not very suitable for games, since they are supposedly not very convenient for frequent, fast pressing; however, a quality Clicky switch is as good as a linear switch in this regard, and the choice depends solely on personal preference. But the unequivocal disadvantages of such keyboards include a rather loud click sound, which in some situations may be superfluous.

As for specific colors, here are their features:

- Red (red). Linear type switches with minimum resistance. They are popular, in particular, among professional gamers who deal with dynamic games and try by all means to speed up their reaction to gaming events. On the other hand, a low force increases the likelihood of accidentally pressing an unnecessary button.

— Black. Another type of linear switches. They have a tighter move compared to Red, which, on the one hand, requires a little more effort, on the other hand, minimizes the chance of accidentally pressing the wrong key.

Blue. Switches in clicky format, with tactile feedback and a click.

— Brown. Switches with tactile feedback, but no "click". The Brown action is great for when you want a keyboard with tactile feedback and at the same time you want to avoid unnecessary noise (although the sound is still louder than on a membrane keyboard). In addition, it is considered a good option for tech who are just starting to get acquainted with mechanical keyboards.

— Silver. Linear switches designed for maximum operating speed. They have a very low stroke - about 1 - 1.2 mm - as well as a very small pressing force, which contributes to high speed. At the same time, the use of such a keyboard requires a certain skill, since even a small effort from an accidental touch usually leads to the operation of a key.

Switch resource

Keyboard switch durability is measured by the number of presses the keys can withstand before they begin to show signs of wear or malfunction. Switches can have a lifespan of several million to tens of millions of clicks. In laboratory conditions, this parameter is checked using special testing machines, which diligently press the keys the required number of times, on the basis of which a verdict is made regarding the approximate service life of the switches.

Hot Swap

"Hot" replacement of mechanical keyboard switches without the procedure of disassembling and soldering the manipulator. Hot Swap technology allows you to change one switch for another in a matter of seconds. This is convenient both when the switches fail, and when using the keyboard in different scenarios. Most often, the technology is used in advanced gaming devices.

Additional keys

The number of additional keys provided in the design of the keyboard.

Such keys do not belong to the standard layout and are intended for quick access to specific functions or individual applications — for example, to control the media player or open mail with one click. This function is convenient because commands from additional keys are usually recognized by the system regardless of what is on the screen — thanks to this, for example, you do not have to close the text editor to switch tracks in the player.

Note that in this case we are talking about individual keys that have a strictly defined purpose and corresponding markings. Programmable buttons, the Fn key (see below) and the functions of the main keys implemented through Fn are not taken into account in this paragraph.

Programmable keys

The number of programmable keys provided in the design of the keyboard. Like the additional ones described above, such keys are located outside the standard layout. At the same time, they do not have a rigidly defined purpose — each individual function can be set by the user himself, hence the name. Some manufacturers, however, can initially programme these keys, but this programme can still be changed if desired.

The advantage of such equipment is obvious: additional features of the keyboard can be easily customized. Gamers especially appreciate this feature, so programmable keys are often found in gaming models. On the other hand, the keys themselves usually have neutral markings (for example, P1, P2 ...), and the user has to remember which function is “linked” to where; this can cause confusion.

Anti-Ghosting

Technology aimed at neutralizing phantom button presses in keyboards with gaming ambitions. The function allows you to simultaneously press numerous keys without false positives of adjacent buttons — a similar situation often occurs in membrane keyboards due to their design features.

#KRO

A parameter that determines the maximum number of simultaneously pressed keys, the signal from which the keyboard is able to process and transmit to the computer. Instead of the "lattice" symbol in the abbreviation KRO, a number is indicated showing the allowable number of simultaneously pressed buttons. Most membrane keyboards come in the 2KRO and 3KRO grades, mechanical models usually start at 6KRO. The NKRO marking says that it is possible to issue a signal from an unlimited number of keys in one sitting.

Fn key

The presence on the keyboard of the Fn key(short for function). It belongs to modifiers, similar to Shift or Ctrl: by itself it does not perform any action, but when pressed simultaneously with another key, it changes its original purpose. Fn is often found in compact keyboards (see "Format"), but can also be set in full-sized ones. The features it provides include quickly changing the screen brightness or sound volume directly from the keyboard, using the centre keys as a Num-block, launching individual applications, and so on. Specific features of using the Fn key depend on the keyboard model.

CMD / OPT keys

The CMD (command) key is an integral attribute of keyboards that are primarily designed to work with Mac OS computer systems. Plays an important role in the quick access service. So, in combination with other buttons, it allows you to open the command line and perform many other actions that are important for a computer system administrator. If we compare keyboards for Mac OS and Windows, then the “CMD” key is an analogue of the system “WIN” button (with the Windows logo), which opens the Start menu.

Similar tasks are assigned to the OPT (option) key. It is intended to be used in conjunction with other buttons to create keyboard shortcuts that enable a variety of additional functions in Mac OS operating systems. Drawing parallels with Windows keyboards, the OPT key is analogous to the Alt button. Typically, this key has the additional designation “⌥”.

Scroll wheel

A wheel for scrolling the image on the screen, similar to that used in modern computer mice. The presence of such a wheel on the keyboard eliminates the need to move your hand to the mouse and back to scroll through the image, which can be especially useful when working with large amounts of text. Also, the scroll wheel is useful if the mouse does not have such a wheel (although such options are becoming less common) or is not available at all (for example, if the keyboard is connected to a laptop).

Cyrillic colour

The colour of the Cyrillic letters printed on the keyboard.

This colour is usually chosen so that the letters are clearly visible. This point does not affect the functionality of the keyboard, and the choice in this case depends mainly on personal preferences. However, there is also a practical point: for inexperienced users who have not mastered touch typing, it is desirable that the letters stand out as much as possible against the background of the keys.

Transparent letters are a separate case — they are used in keyboards equipped with a backlight (see below), due to which such characters, when the backlight is on, are visible even in the dark.

Volume control

Volume control methodprovided in the keyboard (if such a possibility is provided at all).

Through Fn. Adjustment using the Fn key (see above): increasing and decreasing the volume is carried out by simultaneously pressing Fn and one of the main keys of the keyboard (usually from the F1 — F12 row), The main advantage of this control is that it allows you not to overload the keyboard with additional controls — this, in turn, has a positive effect on the dimensions and cost. The disadvantage is the need to simultaneously press two keys, which is not always convenient.

— Additional keys. Control with additional keys specially designed for working with volume. A very convenient and practical option: additional keys are usually clearly labeled, while they take up less space and are cheaper than a wheel or a touch slider (see below).

— Wheel. Control by means of a mechanical wheel, the rotation of which up and down or left and right provides a change in volume. A fairly user-friendly option — visual, intuitive and accessible even blindly. At the same time, the wheel can take up quite a lot of space, and it significantly affects the cost of the keyboard.

— Touch slider. Management using a touch surface, the movement of a finger in one direction or another. The sensor takes up minimal space, looks neat...and generally fits well with the overall design of the keyboard, but it is not cheap. Therefore, this option is extremely rare, mainly in high-end gaming or multimedia keyboards.

Touchpad

The presence of a touchpad in the design of the keyboard — a touch panel that tracks touches (like those devices that are widely used in modern laptops). This function allows you to work on the computer without using the mouse at all and control the cursor by moving your fingers along the panel. Of course, such control is not a full-fledged replacement for a mouse (for example, it is poorly suitable for games), but in some cases it is more convenient to use the touchpad — in particular, because it is closer and you do not need to remove your hands from the keyboard to use it. In addition, additional features may be provided — for example, scaling or rotating the image with two fingers.

Also note that the touchpad can be combined with the Num-block when the corresponding keys are marked on the touch surface. Switching between operating modes (keys / touchpad) is usually carried out with a separate button.

Palm rest

The presence of an additional palm rest in the design of the keyboard. Such a stand is located in the lower (closest to the user) part of the device and is a kind of continuation of the “board”, providing additional support and increasing the comfort of use. However, comfort is largely a matter of personal preference, and not all users like stands; therefore, most often they are made removable.

Built-in memory

The presence in the keyboard of its own built-in memory.

This feature is found mainly in high-end models of game specialization(see "Intended use"). The built-in memory in such keyboards is mainly used to store user settings — for example, the set functions of programmable keys — as well as macros (sequences of commands that are activated by pressing one or two buttons). Anyway, the presence of its own memory means extended options for customizing the keyboard.

Game mode

The presence in the keyboard of a special game mode.

This function is found exclusively in models of the corresponding specialization (see "Intended use"). Enabling Game Mode disables some of the keys and keyboard shortcuts used by the system, such as the Windows Start menu button and the context menu button. Thanks to this, you do not have to worry that an accidental key press will call a system function and interrupt the game.

In many models, you can customize a specific set of keys that are deactivated in the game mode.

USB port

The number of native USB ports in the keyboard design.

The presence of these ports actually allows you to use the keyboard as a USB hub — for connecting various peripherals to a computer. Such a connection is convenient because the connectors are literally at hand, you do not need to reach for the system unit. The number of ports corresponds to the number of USB devices that can be connected to the keyboard at the same time without the use of splitters and other additional equipment.

Audio jack

The type of audio jack provided in the design of the keyboard (if it has such a function at all).

The audio jack on the keyboard is often more convenient than the jack on the PC case: it is right under the user's hand, you do not need to reach for the system unit to connect audio devices (headphones, microphones, etc.). Specific types of connectors can be as follows:

— Mini-Jack (2x3.5 mm). A set of two 3.5mm mini-jacks. It is for such connectors that plugs are made in most modern headphones, as well as specialized computer speakers and microphones. Note that each of the jacks has its own specialization: one (usually green) is an output for headphones / speakers, the second (red) is an input for a microphone (or headset microphone plug). The same principle of connecting audio devices is used in most modern sound cards, so this option is most popular in keyboards.

— Mini-Jack (4-pin 3.5 mm). A specific type of 3.5 mm mini-Jack connector that has 4 pins (instead of the standard 3). It is intended mainly for connecting mobile headsets: such headsets, unlike computer ones, have one plug through which both headphones and a microphone work. However, ordinary “ears” can also be connected to the 4-pin socket — this possibility is allowed by the design. Connectors of this type are found mainly in tablet keyboards, as well as in some gaming models.

Lighting

The colour of the backlight provided in the design of the keyboard.

In general, the backlight performs two functions: practical (makes the keys more visible in low light) and aesthetic (gives the keyboard a beautiful appearance). However, it cannot be said that non-backlit keyboards will be unusable in the dark, the light from the monitor will still illuminate the buttons. The simplest version of the backlight is one-colour. In this case, specific colours can be different: for example, white is well suited for general-purpose keyboards (work or home), but other shades can be found in gaming or design models, for example, red, green, blue, purple or orange. If two or three colours are indicated for the keyboard, this may mean either the ability to switch between these colours, or that this model comes in several versions that differ in the shade of the backlight; these nuances should be clarified separately.

The most advanced options are multi-colour and RGB backlighting. Multi-colour systems are called systems in which more than three colour options are provided, sometimes with intermediate shades. And RGB-backlight all...ows you to choose almost any shade at the request of the user; in addition, the possibility of synchronization (see "Illumination with effects") is found mainly in such systems, although single-colour keyboards can also be equipped with other effects.

Lighting effects

The presence of additional effects in the backlight provided in the keyboard (see above). For models with the backlight synchronization function, this item indicates the synchronization technology.

Additional backlight effects can be different: multi-coloured backlighting of individual keyboard zones, smooth “flowing” of one colour into another, response to system or game events, etc.; specific features should be clarified for each model separately. As for synchronization, it allows you to coordinate the backlighting of various system components — keyboards, case mice, graphics cards, etc.; this opportunity is especially appreciated by the owners of high-end gaming stations. Coordination requires that all highlighted components support the same technology; usually, each manufacturer has its own — Aura Sync for Asus, RGB Fusion for Gigabyte, etc.

Interface

Interface used in a wired keyboard (see "Connection type").

USB. A standard universal connector for connecting peripherals, present in almost all modern computers — from desktop PCs to microcomputers. USB keyboards are the most versatile, so this option is the most common today. The main disadvantage of this option is that the USB slot occupied by the keyboard may be needed for another peripheral device; however, this problem is quite easily solved — for example, using a USB hub or purchasing a keyboard with its own hub (see below).

PS/2. A specialized connector with a characteristic round shape used to connect keyboards and mice; in modern PCs, both two ports can be provided, for both, and one universal. Anyway, this connection method is convenient in that all USB ports remain free; this can be important when using numerous USB peripherals. At the same time, the PS/2 connector itself is rather large and poorly suited for laptops and other compact equipment, and therefore is found only in desktop PCs. And even in the latter case, it's ok to check the availability of PS/2 before buying a keyboard with such a plug.

— USB or PS/2. Usually, in this case, we mean USB keyboards equipped with an adapter for a PS/2 port. Features of both interfaces are described above; here we note that this option is the most versatile, it allows you to choose the connection method depending on th...e situation. In addition, it is convenient because there are relatively few PS/2 models, and it can be easier to find a suitable USB keyboard equipped with an adapter. The adapters themselves are inexpensive and do not really affect the price of the device; of course, they are sold separately, but the kit is often the preferred option.

— Corporate. Connection using a specific connector, which does not apply to the standard (described above) interfaces and is mainly used in the technique of a certain brand, at best, in some third-party devices. This option can be very convenient for tablet accessories (see "By Direction").

Power source

The type of power used in wireless keyboards. It can be a replaceable battery or its own built-in battery.

As replaceable batteries in modern keyboards, batteries or accumulators of the AA (“finger”) or AAA (“mini-finger”) format can be used. The main advantage of this power supply is the ability to quickly replace dead batteries with new ones — if there are any left, a few seconds are enough, and the keyboard is ready to work again. However, batteries are often not included and must be purchased separately. In addition, anyway, you have to buy new batteries as the old ones wear out — or fork out for rather expensive batteries and, possibly, a charger.

Built-in battery, in turn, relieves the user of the need to purchase batteries. On the other hand, in the event of a discharge, such a battery cannot be quickly replaced, and the only option to continue working is to charge it, which can take quite a long time.

Battery time

The operating time in this case is quite approximate: it is indicated for a certain average mode of use, and the actual battery life may turn out to be either less or more than the claimed one, depending on the specifics of the application. Nevertheless, this is a fairly reliable indicator, it is quite possible to evaluate different battery models and compare them with each other: the difference in the claimed operating time is usually quite consistent with the difference in real battery life.

Separately, we note that the operating time for battery keyboards is generally less than for battery-powered models, so this parameter is indicated in days, not months.

Battery time

The operating time in this case is quite approximate: it is indicated for a certain average mode of use. The actual battery life may turn out to be either less or more than the claimed one, depending on the specifics of the application; in addition, the quality of a particular brand of batteries greatly affects the operating time. Nevertheless, this is a fairly reliable indicator, it is quite possible to evaluate different models and compare them with each other: the difference in the claimed operating time is usually quite consistent with the difference in real battery life when using batteries of similar quality.

It is worth saying that modern battery-powered keyboards have pretty solid battery life, measured in months; in the most "long-playing" models, the operating time is about 36 months (that is, 3 years).

Skeleton keyboard

Keyboards made in a Skeleton case.

The main difference between such cases and the classical ones is that the mechanism of each key is not hidden at the base of the keyboard, but, on the contrary, rises somewhat above it. Due to this, the keys can be easily removed and put back into place, which makes it much easier to clean from dust and dirt. And in gaming keyboards of this type, the kit often includes interchangeable buttons that differ in colour and texture from the main ones. Actually, almost all models with this feature are specifically gaming (see "By Direction").

LCD screen

The keyboard has its own display. Such a display can display various meaningful information — from data on the included key layout to a calculator, in-game chat (in gaming keyboards) and even data such as air temperature. Of course, the specific capabilities and characteristics of the display may be different, they should be specified separately in each case; however, this feature provides additional convenience anyway.

Detachable cable

The presence of a removable cable in the design of the keyboard.

This feature provides, first of all, additional convenience in storage and transportation: it is easier to pack the removed cable than to wind and lay the wire attached to the keyboard. Another advantage is that if necessary, the complete cable can be replaced without changing the entire keyboard — for example, if it is damaged or if a longer cable is needed. However, these moments are not so often significant, so there are not so many keyboards with detachable cables.

Braided cable

The presence of a braid in the design of a regular keyboard cable.

Braided wire is more durable and reliable than unbraided cable: it is more difficult to damage, it resists sharp bends better. On the other hand, this feature affects the overall cost of the keyboard, and the mentioned advantages do not affect the main functionality of the model. So choosing a keyboard with a braid makes sense only if you are worried about the reliability of the wire, or if you plan to use it in adverse conditions, with frequent squeezing and bending.

Waterproof

Protecting the keyboard from spilling liquid on it. Most waterproof keyboards do not have a full-fledged sealed case and are designed to remain operational in the event of accidental contact with a relatively small amount of liquid (up to 200 mL) — for example, in the classic case of spilling coffee on the keyboard.

Metal structure

Keyboards whose body or certain elements are made of metal. This can be either the entire body or its parts - for example, a metal plate as a base for keys. Note that when it comes to the metal construction of the keyboard, the latter option is more common.

Compared to plastic—the most common keyboard case material—metal is much stronger, more durable, and more durable. It has a significant weight, but in this case it can also be written down as advantages — massiveness contributes to stability and reduces the likelihood that the keyboard will "fidget" under the fingers. In addition, metal cases look stylish and solid. On the other hand, they are noticeably more expensive than plastic ones, and the advantages mentioned are not so much practical as psychological. Therefore, this feature is found mainly in advanced gaming models (see "By Direction"), for which a solid appearance is no less important than functionality.

Replacement keys included

The presence of interchangeable keys — more precisely, caps for keys ("keycaps") — is included in the package of the keyboard.

This feature is found mainly in gaming keyboards(see "By Direction"). Replaceable in them are usually made only individual keys, the most significant in games — in particular, WASD and arrows. For such keys, two sets of keycaps are provided — ordinary ones, in tune with the rest of the buttons, and gaming ones that stand out from the general background. Thanks to this, you can adjust the keyboard to the current format of use: for example, in games, the keys that stand out by colour are very convenient, and when typing, they can be confusing.

Sensor

The principle of operation of the mouse supplied with the keyboard.

— Optical. The principle of operation of optical mice is to use an LED that illuminates the surface under the mouse, and a photo sensor that “observes” the illuminated surface and tracks movements. This technology is quite reliable and inexpensive; at the same time, traditional optical mice, although they are inferior to laser and BlueTrack mice in terms of accuracy, however, they work more than satisfactorily on standard surfaces (rodent pad, tabletop). In addition, various specific technologies can be used in the design to increase accuracy and allow working on unusual surfaces.

— Laser. The development of the idea of the optical mice described above: the principle of operation is the same, however, for illumination, in accordance with the name, a more intense light source is used — a laser. Thanks to this, laser mice are more accurate and behave better in non-standard conditions — on fleecy, polished surfaces, etc. — however, they are more expensive.

— BlueTrack. Microsoft proprietary technology (however, used by other manufacturers), which provides a number of improvements for optical mice (see above): a bright blue LED (hence the name), high-quality coated lenses, a large sensor, etc. Thanks to this, such mice are significantly superior to conventional optical mice both in accuracy and in the variety of surfaces with which they are compa...tible. The disadvantage of this traditional option is the high cost.

Number of buttons

The number of buttons in the design of the mouse, which is included in the kit. The minimum number of such buttons to work in most modern operating systems is two, and a larger number, usually, means that the mouse has additional functions. For example, the third key can be used to change the resolution of the mouse sensor on the fly, for the function of double or triple click (the latter is used in games for shooting in short bursts); a pair of buttons on the side under the thumb is usually configured for the "back" and "forward" functions in the browser, etc. And in gaming mice, there can be more than a dozen additional buttons for the fastest access to various game functions.

Scroll wheels

The number of scroll wheels provided in the design of the complete mouse. The most traditional option is considered to be one wheel that provides movement up and down (and in some mice — in all directions), but sometimes it can be supplemented with a second one — for horizontal scrolling. The latter is useful when working with large-format materials — for example, in the field of design or printing.

Programmable buttons

The presence of programmable buttons in the design of the complete mouse.

Programmable are most often made additional buttons that do not belong to the standard set of three keys (left, right, wheel); however, there are exceptions. Anyway, such a button can be "tied" not only to a separate function, but also to a macro — a sequence of commands specified by the user. This is especially handy in games; in fact, programmable buttons are found mainly in sets for gaming purposes(see "In the direction").

DPI switch

The presence of a DPI switch button in the design of the mouse.

This button allows you to change the actual resolution of the sensor — in other words, the speed of the cursor on the screen — on the fly, without going into the computer's software settings. This feature is useful primarily in cases where different DPI values are needed for different tasks — for example, if in some game situations you need increased accuracy of movements, for which you can sacrifice speed, or if the mouse sensitivity in the game is not configurable, and the default option is not satisfied.

Sensor resolution

Resolution of the optical sensor used in the bundled mouse. Like a camera matrix, such a sensor consists of many individual photosensitive points; this parameter indicates how many sensor points are for each inch of the surface on which the mouse moves.

Although high DPI values \u200b\u200bare often considered an indicator of good mouse accuracy, in fact this moment only affects the speed of moving the cursor around the screen (and not the actual one, but the maximum possible one — the “working” DPI value in the settings is often reduced, otherwise using the mouse would be inconvenient ). Therefore, high sensor resolutions are important mainly for working on large monitors, and even in such cases, indicators of 1000 – 3000 DPI are considered quite sufficient, higher values \u200b\u200bare more of a publicity stunt than a really justified necessity.

Power supply (wireless)

The type of power used in the wireless mice that are included with some keyboards. It can be a replaceable battery or its own built-in battery.

However, this function also has a very practical role — the backlight serves as at least an indicator that the mouse is normally connected to the computer and has no problems with the cable or connector. And in some models with a DPI switch button (see above), the backlight colour may change depending on the sensor resolution set.
