All mechanical devices are simpler and cheaper than electronic ones, moreover, they do not depend on batteries and can be used even in the absence of electricity. On the other hand, their functionality is noticeably narrower, and their use is more difficult. So, when determining the exact size, you have to use two scales — the main and auxiliary, the so-called vernier: first, the approximate result of measurements in millimetres is determined on the main scale, then corrections are made to it according to data from the vernier, and only after that the final result is obtained in fractions of a millimetre . In addition, in calipers (see "Type"), this principle of operation makes it difficult to measure with high accuracy — in most of these models, the division value is 0.1 mm (although more accurate instruments are also found).
