However, the second option is rather a specific exception.

A distinctive feature of files for soft plastics are fairly large teeth. This is done mainly so that the material being cut does not heat up, does not melt and does not stick together again, and the chips do not clog the blade. Theoretically, you can cut thin plastic with fine-toothed metal files, but this will have to be done at minimum speed — in order to avoid the same overheating.

Also note that some canvases, originally intended for wood, have the possibility of using plastic.
