— the main advantages of plastic over metal are low cost and lighter weight, which makes the canisters small and at the same time convenient. In terms of strength, this material is somewhat inferior to metal, but it is still not easy to break through or cut through the wall of a plastic canister, even if you specifically set yourself such a goal. So in general, such containers are quite reliable and practical.

At the same time, it is worth touching separately on the use of plastic containers for storing gasoline and some other similar substances. Some time ago, it was forbidden to pour fuel into plastic for safety reasons: friction of the liquid against the walls of the vessel caused a static charge, which could lead to a spark and an explosion. Recently, however, a lot of plastic canisters have appeared, originally created as fuel containers: they use special materials and design solutions that prevent static troubles. Therefore, if a plastic canister is initially positioned by the manufacturer as a container for fuel, you can safely pour gasoline into it without fear of “accidents”. However, despite this, the rules for the sale of petroleum products in some countries (including in the post-Soviet space) prohibit pouring petroleum products into plastic canisters at gas stations, even if the container is initially suitable for such use. So before buying such a container, it's ok to clarify whether there will be problems with it when buying fuel at gas stations.
