Hard water is water with a high content of calcium and magnesium salts. It is highly undesirable to use such water in dishwashers: it reduces the effectiveness of detergents and leads to the appearance of insoluble deposits on heaters and in pipelines, which can even completely damage the dishwasher. To soften water, a special salt is used, which “draws” calcium and magnesium ions from the water, replacing them with sodium ions and preventing the described phenomena. The softening salt is consumed during use, so its supply must be replenished periodically.
