The specific functionality of the dispenser varies: water can come from a built-in container or from a water supply to which the unit is connected; the design often includes filters of one type or another; different models may differ in performance and cooling speed, etc. However, in any case, this function has its advantages. In particular, pouring water from a dispenser is much more convenient than cooling it in bottles or other containers.

In the vast majority of refrigerator designs, the dispenser is placed externally - on the outside of the door. To get cold water, there is no need to open the main compartment – this minimizes heat loss and helps save energy. However, there are also models with an internal dispenser, for which a place is found in the refrigerating compartment of the unit.
