— DVD is the optical disc standard that replaced the CD. On a regular (single-layer, single-sided) DVD disc, about 4.7 GB of information is standardly placed — almost 7 times more than on a CD. Because of this capacity, DVDs gained popularity as media for movies and games, for which the capacity of CDs was no longer sufficient. Such media are also used for music — in the DVD-Audio format, which also significantly exceeds the previous CD-Audio in quality.Marking R, as in all optical discs, means a recordable medium: information can be written only once, without the possibility of erasing. At the same time, only discs created according to DVD-Forum specifications (which are based on Pioneer technology) have the DVD-R marking. Another similar format is DVD+R. Theoretically, the "minus" format is less perfect and more prone to write errors, but in fact this difference is almost imperceptible.
