— DVD is the optical disc standard that replaced the CD. On a regular (single-layer, single-sided) DVD disc, about 4.7 GB of information is standardly placed — almost 7 times more than on a CD. Because of this capacity, DVDs gained popularity as media for movies and games, for which the capacity of CDs was no longer sufficient. Such media are also used for music — in the DVD-Audio format, which also significantly exceeds the previous CD-Audio in quality.The RW index refers to discs that can be rewritable multiple times. Specifically, this format was developed by the DVD + RW Alliance, as opposed to the original DVD-RW (see the relevant paragraph). "Plus" media received a number of improvements — in particular, a special markup that improves the positioning of the recording head, as well as the ability to record new data without first erasing old ones (in a "regular" DVD-RW, you have to erase the entire disc first). This difference is not particularly significant for episodic recording and overwriting; but if you have to do this often and in large quantities, it's more convenient to still use DVD + RW. Also note that some older drives may "not see" such disks, but such situations are becoming less common.
