— BD (Blu-ray) discs were created as a further development of optical discs, after DVD. The standard capacity for this type of single-layer media is about 25 GB. This makes these discs suitable for high definition movies (Full HD and even higher) with multi-channel audio and multiple soundtrack options; in fact, Blu-ray has gained popularity primarily as a video medium, although technically such discs can be used for any type of data.

Specifically, BD-R discs are a one-time writeable variation of Blu-ray: the information printed on such a disc cannot be erased to write new data.
