Strainers

— a tool used to filter cocktails when pouring from a shaker The classic strainer (Hawthorne) is a round plate with a handle; holes are made in the plate, and a metal spring is fixed around the circumference. The shaker is covered with such a device (with a spring downwards) and the contents are drained through the holes, due to which large pieces of ice and fruit remain in the shaker, and the liquid with small pieces of ice and finely ground pulp is freely poured through the strainer. There is another kind of strainers — Julep; they are simpler in design, do not have a spring and resemble a spoon with holes made in the cup.

Note that both types are used primarily with Boston shakers (see "kitchen shaker"), which do not come with their own filters. At the same time, the classic strainer is designed for the main shaker glass, and the julep, which has smaller dimensions, is usually intended for a small mixing glass.
