This feature prevents unwanted contact with surrounding objects (for example, in a tight purse), which would be fraught with the appearance of marks, and also slows down the drying of ink. At the same time, retractable pens are more convenient than pens with caps due to the absence of the cap itself, which can be lost, broken, etc. The main disadvantage in this case is the complexity of the design: it somewhat reduces reliability, increases the cost, and also (in most cases) requires the use of special refills.
