White balance is responsible for the overall colour gamut of the displayed "picture"; this gamma will be different for different light sources, and if you do not adjust this setting, the colours on the screen may look too warm or too cold. Auto white balance avoids such troubles and at the same time eliminates the need to manually change the settings — an important point when driving.
