Gear oil with SAE approval

SAE

— a family of standards developed by the association of the same name. Do not confuse this parameter with SAE viscosity (see the relevant paragraph) — here individual standards are meant with their own specific requirements.

Most often in modern manual transmission oils there is compliance with the SAE J2360 standard. It stipulates that the oil "exceeds the requirements of API GL-5" and is intended for use in hypoid gears operating under increased loads (including high speed or high traction at low speed) and with numerous surfaces in contact with sliding.
